Glad to hear your OK. Like I've always been told, there are two types of riders, those who have dropped their bikes and those who will. Welcome to the club. Sounds like the only real damage can be fixed easily.
Now, on to your question. Highway bars are usually attached to an engine guard or the frame and serve no other purpose but to let you stretch out. Your shifter, rear brake and pegs remain in their original position. On the other hand, forward controls involve removing the stock location of these and relocating them forward so you can stretch out and still keep your feet on the controls.
Forward controls will cost in the hundreds of dollars and involve some mechanical expertise. Installing highway bars can be done easily and for less than a hundred. I have highway bars on both my bikes and enjoy them on long rides but around town they don't see much use.
